• Question: if you could cure any disease what would it be ?

      It depends on how you define “disease”. Cancer is the obvious one but cancer is actually lots of different diseases (e.g. breast cancer, prostate cancer, blood cancers…etc) caused by different things. Curing cancer would be very difficult! Then you could go for an infectious disease – something that is caused by things like bacteria or viruses – like TB, HIV, malaria… Or you could go for “preventable” illnesses, which includes things like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, smoking-related lung diseases…. I honestly don’t know which would be most beneficial to the highest number of people.

      Cancer, heart disease and diabetes are all big problems here in the west, but after heart disease the leading cause of death worldwide is diarrhea. This is a huge problem in places where clean water is scarce. It’s mainly an issue of environment and cleanliness, rather than scientific cure though.

      I would cure old age. This happens because your body cannot regenerate itself effectively after a good few years. If we could find a way to make this regeneration process work perfectly every time, then people could live for ever!

      I’ve spent a lot of time in my PhD studying the virus HIV, so if I could cure any disease it would AIDS. The virus is really difficult to stop because it quickly changes itself and becomes immune to drugs which used to stop it working. The virus stops your immune system working so that any infection you get can be deadly. Huge numbers of lives would be saved with a successful cure.

      I would choose to cure brain diseases… particularily degenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s Disease and Parkinson’s Disease, which right now have no cure. Losing all your life memories and brain power is just a horrible thought. 🙁

      Let’s hope Claire, Jon, Tom, Jack and I get our wish…. one day!
